Overview

The Activate! project, developed by Applecart Arts in collaboration with the University of East London (UEL) and Newham’s Youth Empowerment Service (YES), is a dynamic theatre initiative aimed at inspiring young people to engage with the political process. This powerful project centers around a theatre play devised and performed by UEL graduates, designed to demystify politics, spark conversation, and empower young audiences to become active participants in shaping their communities and society at large.

At the heart of Activate! is the belief that storytelling and theatre can be transformative tools for social engagement. The play, which blends drama, humor, and interactive elements, addresses key themes such as democracy, voting, and political representation, making these concepts accessible and relatable to younger audiences. The performance invites viewers to reflect on their role in society, illustrating how individual actions can lead to collective change. Through this creative lens, young people are encouraged to think critically about political issues that affect them and understand the power they hold to influence outcomes through their voices and votes.

ACTIVATE! will be performed at Newham High schools and Youth Zones in November 2024.

Partnerships

The partnership with UEL plays a crucial role in the project's success. Graduates from UEL’s renowned performing arts programs are at the forefront of this initiative, bringing their fresh perspectives and artistic talents to the production. These emerging theatre-makers not only create an engaging, thought-provoking piece but also serve as role models for the young audiences, showcasing how creativity and civic responsibility can intersect.

UEL’s involvement ensures a professional standard of production, while also providing a bridge for young people interested in pursuing careers in the arts and media.

Newham’s Youth Empowerment Service is an equally integral partner, bringing their expertise in youth development and community engagement. YES, which works closely with young people across the borough, helps to connect the project with those who may not have previously considered political participation or theatre as avenues for self-expression.

By leveraging YES’s network and resources, Activate! is able to reach a wide audience, particularly those from underrepresented communities, ensuring the project is inclusive and impactful.

What is the Shaped by Community commission?

The Shaped by Community commission called for projects that will enrich the creative experience within Newham and provide opportunities for residents to engage in artistic and cultural activity. Our organisation has a strong focus on ensuring that the work we support is shaped by what communities across Newham need and want.

We held an open call to apply for up to £15,000 each for six projects.

To us, ‘Shaped by Community’ means that your community’s wants and needs have guided all levels and stages of the project, including in the decision-making.

Newham is full of creative communities that have rich, cultural experience to share. This commission aims to create space for people to create and be celebrated within this borough that we call home.

Meet the rest of the projects on the Shaped by Community project page.
