Wonderful Women of Newham map

Map artwork by local artist Elena Juzulenaite

Price: Free

We’d like to celebrate International Women’s Day all year round, and so we’ve commissioned artist Elena Juzulenaite and women’s heritage expert Rosanagh Fuller to recreate their Wonderful Women of Newham map to be displayed on the façade of the Community Links building in Canning Town.

To celebrate this beautiful new artwork, we’d like to invite locals of all ages and genders to join us for a ‘History? Her-story!’ walking tour along the route on the map, followed by a drawing workshop at Community Links.

The walking tour tells the story of the women workers of Newham’s shops, docks and factories, as well as the role of Canning Town locations in important women’s right movements like the Suffragettes.

The guided walking tour takes about 45 minutes. It is recommended to wear easy shoes and to bring an umbrella if rain is expected.

Please let sophie.crocker@culturewithin.org.uk know if you have any access requirements.

The walking tour is followed by a free drawing workshop where you can get your hands dirty by celebrating women and their stories in charcoal. Find more information about the drawing workshop here.

Elena and Rosanagh originally created this map as part of a Newham Heritage Month commission by the East End Women’s Museum.
