Young Legacy

Overview

Newham Poetry Group is hosting 10 poetry sessions where people aged 18-25 can dive into poetry, creative writing, spoken word, and storytelling. At the end of the project, their work will be featured in a published book, which will be launched across 11 public libraries in Newham. Plus, you’ll get 5 copies of your own book!

The Young Legacy project is a chance to develop creative and artistic skills while boosting social well-being and personal growth. Our workshops will cover everything from poetry and creative writing to spoken word and performance techniques like body language, improvisation, pitching, voice projection, and modulation. Participants will sharpen their artistic abilities, build self-confidence, connect with others in their community, manage stress, and strengthen resilience to tackle mental health challenges.

Newham residents (18-25) who are new(ish) to poetry/creative writing and who have not been published yet would be particularly welcomed. More dates are yet to be confirmed.

Email newhampoetrygroup@gmail.com to sign up.

About Newham Poetry Group

We are a group of local, talented and enthusiastic poets based in Newham.

Newham Poetry Group (NPG) is a volunteer-led not-for-profit community group, made up of proactive residents who believe that creative activities should be accessible to all, especially in the context of our borough's cultural diversity. Newham Poetry Group promotes social inclusion, community engagement, and residents’ well-being, through creative activities that include poetry, creative writing, storytelling, and music.

We use creativity as a tool for self-development, social cohesion, and academic support. Newham Poetry Group organises and supports a huge range of initiatives that benefit our local community: projects to increase knowledge of local poets and writers, Newham Heritage Month, local poets’ festivals, storytelling festivals, and much more. All our activities provide benefits to all the community around East London, as all backgrounds, ages, skills, and languages are proactively welcomed.

What is the Shaped by Community commission?

The Shaped by Community commission called for projects that will enrich the creative experience within Newham and provide opportunities for residents to engage in artistic and cultural activity. Our organisation has a strong focus on ensuring that the work we support is shaped by what communities across Newham need and want.

We held an open call to apply for up to £15,000 each for six projects.

To us, ‘Shaped by Community’ means that your community’s wants and needs have guided all levels and stages of the project, including in the decision-making.

Newham is full of creative communities that have rich, cultural experience to share. This commission aims to create space for people to create and be celebrated within this borough that we call home.

Meet the rest of the projects on the Shaped by Community project page.
