Newham Youth Comedy Night
Overview
Comedian and Drama Facilitator Deane Dixon-Foster will be delivering a comedy project for young people aged 11-16, in collaboration with Immediate Theatre and Little Illford Youth Zone, where the sessions will take place.
Laughter brings people together, sparks friendships and creates memories that last a lifetime. Take part in a series of weekly workshops every Thursday at Little Illford Youth Zone from 3:15pm until 4:30pm where you will be introduced to multiple styles of comedy including stand-up comedy, sketches and improvisation. Are you interested in comedy but find that your passion lies outside of the performing side of things? This project is not just for performers. Creating and learning how to write comedy will be a huge part of this project and there will be lots of opportunity for your ideas to be showcased in collaboration with performers.
During the project there will be appearances from professional London based comedians that will be part of a Q&A (question and answer) and may even tell you a joke or two!
Once you have decided where your passion within comedy lies, you will begin to create a piece either as a solo act, duo, or group. You will then spend a week during February half term (17th-21st) rehearsing your brand-new comedy act for the Newham Youth Comedy Night – A great opportunity to showcase your comedic material in front of a live audience.
Please note that sessions will not run during October half term. Last session in December will be the 5th and we will return in the new year on January 9th.
What is the Shaped by Community commission?
The Shaped by Community commission called for projects that will enrich the creative experience within Newham and provide opportunities for residents to engage in artistic and cultural activity. Our organisation has a strong focus on ensuring that the work we support is shaped by what communities across Newham need and want.
We held an open call to apply for up to £15,000 each for six projects.
To us, ‘Shaped by Community’ means that your community’s wants and needs have guided all levels and stages of the project, including in the decision-making.
Newham is full of creative communities that have rich, cultural experience to share. This commission aims to create space for people to create and be celebrated within this borough that we call home.
Meet the rest of the projects on the Shaped by Community project page.
